At least once a month a business owner comes to us after a "guaranteed number 1" SEO package went wrong. Sometimes they just wasted money. Sometimes the cheap company actively damaged their site with spam links, and the cleanup costs more than doing it properly ever would have. This post is the warning we wish they'd read first.

Why the guarantee is always a lie

Google itself states that nobody can guarantee rankings. Not agencies, not "Google Partners", not anyone. Rankings are decided by an algorithm nobody outside Google controls, so a guarantee is either a con or a trick, usually the trick of ranking you number 1 for a search phrase nobody has ever typed, then pointing at it as delivery.

The red flags, collected

Guaranteed positions and 30 day promises. Claims of a special relationship with Google. Hundreds of backlinks for double digit money, which means spam links that can get your site penalised. A quote before anyone has audited your site. Reports full of impressions and "keywords tracked" instead of rankings, clicks and enquiries. And the nastiest one: contracts where the company owns your website, so leaving them means losing your site.

What honest SEO looks like

An audit before a quote. Technical fixes and site structure before content. Content built around what customers actually search, not what's easy to rank. Real movement measured in months, and then compounding: because the one honest, glorious thing about SEO is that once you own the rankings for your trade in your area, those clicks are free, and they stay free.

Slow to start, nearly impossible to stop. That's the honest pitch, and it's better than any fake guarantee.
